Philip Hare

Partner

Philip Hare is a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Adviser. He spent 25 years with PwC, fifteen as a senior tax manager. From 2006 to 2014, he led PwC’s team providing services to Venture Capital Trusts, Enterprise Investment Scheme and Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme companies, investment fund managers and investors. For each of those eight years, members of the EIS Association voted Philip and his team Best EIS Tax Adviser.

Andrew Lennie

Senior Manager

Andrew is a Chartered Accountant, having trained and qualified with PricewaterhouseCoopers in London. During his time at PwC, Andrew was part of PwC’s Investment Management tax practice, private business tax team and venture capital practice. He specialises in advising early stage, venture capital backed businesses and was a key member of Philip’s team at PwC, advising clients on the UK’s Enterprise Investment Scheme, Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme and Venture Capital Trusts regime. Andrew holds a master’s degree from the University of Edinburgh and an undergraduate degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa.

Mike Budd

Associate

Mike qualified as a Chartered Tax Adviser in 2003 and has over 26 years experience in the profession advising on various aspects of taxation. Following his training with Smith & Williamson (now Evelyn Partners), he spent 4 years working at a private bank. In 2011, Mike set up his own consultancy practice focused on both the practical and technical aspects of HMRC’s Venture Capital Schemes (primarily the Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) and Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS)), an area he had gained a vast amount of experience in whilst working in his previous commercial and technical roles. Mike is a member of The Chartered Institute of Taxation and Fellow of the Association of Taxation Technicians.

Alison Caulfield

Senior Manager

Alison is a Chartered Tax Adviser and a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.  Alison trained with Deloitte from 1993 moving to PwC in 1997, initially in accounts and audit, then specialising in tax.  She qualified as a Chartered Tax Adviser in 1999.  During her time at PwC, Alison was a member of the Private Client Team advising High Net Worth individuals in all areas of tax, predominantly capital gains tax and IHT for UK resident and domiciled individuals.  Alison has advised on EIS matters since 2000.  For three years Alison worked for a single family office managing all aspects of tax, accounting and investments, before moving back into practice initially on a self-employed basis in March 2016. Alison is a member of the Legal, Tax & Regulatory Committee of the UK Business Angels Association.

Gareth Hewins

Tax Adviser

Gareth is a Chartered Accountant, having trained and qualified with EY LLP in their Wealth and Asset Management department. During his time at EY he spent time in both the assurance and corporate finance departments, where he specialised in private equity and venture capital clients. Between 2015 and 2019, he worked at Beringea LLP, a venture capital fund manager with two Venture Capital Trusts, where he progressed to Chief Financial Officer. During his time at Beringea he gained first-hand experience of the VCT rules both in respect of compliance and monitoring.

Tom Hopley

Tax Adviser

Tom joined Philip Hare and Associates in 2022 having previously worked at Octopus Investments where he gained experience as a VCT Management Accountant and later worked for Octopus Property, a lending division of the Octopus Group. More recently, Tom worked for Citco Custody UK as a Senior Depositary Analyst where he was responsible for depositary and custody services for a number of private equity, real estate and hedge fund clients.

Jane Williams

Office Manager

Jane joined Philip Hare & Associates in September 2020 as Office Manager. Prior to joining the firm, Jane spent 25 years working as a PA for PricewaterhouseCoopers, in the Private Business and Private Client Departments. Jane worked for Partners and Directors within the Tax Team who dealt with private individuals, family business, entrepreneurs and large companies.

Jerry Main

Jerry joined Philip Hare & Associates full time in August 2023, having worked part-time with the firm for some months previously. Prior to joining Philip Hare & Associates, Jerry spent three years working for a number of enterprises in a variety of roles. Jerry’s interest in small businesses inspired to him to train with the firm and he has been enjoying meeting and helping entrepreneurs in his role as a Trainee Tax Advisor.

Owen Pickles

Owen joined Philip Hare & Associates full-time in 2023 after having worked for the firm part-time during his final year at university, and he is currently studying to become a member of the Association of Taxation Technicians. Owen graduated with an LLB (Hons) in Law from King’s College London in July 2023 and is an Associate of King’s College.

Tim Hare

Tim joined Philip Hare & Associates in September 2024. Prior to joining the firm, Tim worked as a data analyst in the food industry. Tim graduated with a BSc in Mathematics from the University of Bath in July 202
